It happens a lot in writing. Unfortunatly. I am never harsh on people. And I usually only comment on stuff I think is awesome.

EDIT: for those who can't watch it here, it's on Youtube as well: [link]

EDIT2: People who really want to critique this "walk". Please read the full description, watch the videos I'm linking here and perhaps...study animation before saying shit? Okay? Thank you. :D I'm open to critiques, but only if the person knows what the heck they're talking about. obs: this was directed to a few people of course (those who obviously can't make a good critique).

A lot of people may "complain" about this unsual walk because they're not familiar with animals that move like that (two legs up from the same side in the air and almost hiting the floor at the same time, with a small delay)
So here a few videos so you can compare with the real maned wolf: [link] [link]
So I ask you not to critique it without looking at these or without some thought into your comment. THIS kind of walk is extremely common in animation. Take Shere Khan's animation for example AND REAL LIFE.

Finally done with this test. phew. I feel goooood now. x)
I'm extremely happy with the result in this one as I can see my improvement comparing to my last cycle. Quad animals can be really tricky. Besides some issues with the volumes, I think it's okay.

Info:
39 frames / on twos
There is no texture on the character yet.
Colored on PS.

The production is going slowly, but I'm excited with the results I'm getting. Wish me luck to finish it. :)

Cheers

You can tell it's on the twos.... you should do a full animation sometime w/ tweening.

So true. but there are programs that automate the tweening for you, so you only have to animate the key-frames.

Judging from your artists comments, you are VERY defensive of your work. I can see why, though - it's incredible. I can see that you put a lot of passion into it. I just love it when animators are that passionate about their work. I love this style of animation. Brilliantly animated with a great flat aesthetic. That kinda stuff is just so awesome to me. Great work :)

@00:10looking good. nice design, and generally really nice movement. I have to point out something in you rdescription though. This kind og gait is not very common. only a few animals does is - hyenas for example. But I must say that you could not do this on any kind of animal and state that it's okay just because it's animation and some of the old men did it. I would generally say that one should study the gait of the animal one wants to animate. usually there's a really good reason as to why they walk in a particular way. But I would not call this kind of gait common at all. I animated a hyena walking like this (because it is how they do it), but with great concerns. Would people looking at my reel know that it is how it is supposed to be? I think you did a good job though. :)

@00:10I really do appreciate the the comment! I would, however, ask you to watch a few videos of this animal in particular. This is a maned wolf and they do walk like that so I am "allowed" to reproduce their walk like this, as it's natural to them. Even if it wasn't an animal who walks like that, and a magical creature or fictional character I would be able to play with it's movement as well. If you stop watch Fox and the Hound for example or even All Dogs Go To Heaven frame by frame you'll see they use other animal's movements on their "dog" character. If there is a context behind their choices to do so, I see no problem at all in breaking the rules. Even though it's not the case here, as this animal i animated does walk like that. I did study the gait of this animal quite a lot. Spent more time watching them carefully and making thumbnails rather than actually animating. I did my research. :)

@00:10I do believe this animal walks like this, it looks sort of like an hyena, and they certainly do. I'm more of a 3D person, and I think that as long as one is trying to get a showreel together for a job, one should consider just to do a normal walk - even though they may be a bit more creative on fox and the hound and likewise. because one can't add the "I know this is not standard, but this is how I wanted it to be"-note. And there is always the risk that they might think that one doesn't what's right.
But I know I figured it was a nice experience - it's difficult to make it look right - particularly when seen from the from or from 3/4. I made my hyena walk in a slight bend as well, wich did not make it easier. But as always, it is nice to try out new stuff. and especially the experience of just studiyng a lot of vid ref is giving. :)

@00:10I think the point of animation is to make it believable (not realistic) and give the characters... character.

Animation regularly stylizes characters so that you are only able to recognize them from context, and their walk cycles hardly differ. How many people have you seen do the double-bounce in real life? Yet it is/was used regularly to make a character seem cheery.

I was mainly spurred to respond this rate to the party because I read some kind of slightly arrogant "I know you actually just didn't know how to animate it right" attitude from that comment. Oh well.

@00:10Oh no, I made something like this. I actually felt happy to see someone else try this out. I had a lot of worries when I tried it out myself, mainly because some people stated that I had made a wrong choice.
I made my comment based on what the artist wrote in the description. I am certain that the artist fully understands the dynamics of four legged walks - if not, this would not have looked as convincing! I just thought it was awesome to see someone else try this out with great success, because I know how difficult it is to make it look right. And how brave you have to be to give it a go.

I am sorry you thought I came of arrogant, since I was just trying to show some respect to this work. Nice animation is nice animation. :)

@00:10My goodness, this looks awesome. It has to be one of the smoothest animations I've seen on dA, or at least very very close. The colors look really great, you did an awesome job of picking them out. I must say that I love the legs and the tail :meow: and the way the mane moves with the wolf's steps looks great.
Looking good! :D
